UK Government Initiates Transition to eVisas, Replacing Physical Immigration Documents by 2025

The UK government has transitioned to eVisas, marking a significant step in modernizing the border and introducing a digital immigration system. Starting from April 17, 2024, millions of visa holders with physical immigration documents, known as biometric residence permits (BRPs), will receive invitations to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account for accessing their eVisas. This phased rollout aims to streamline border security, reduce fraud, and provide a more secure method for proving immigration status. Minister for Legal Migration and the Border, Tom Pursglove MP, emphasizes the benefits of eVisas, including enhanced security, convenience, and cost savings. The transition aligns with global trends as other countries also shift towards digital immigration documents. As part of the broader transformation, physical immigration documents will be gradually phased out by 2025, ensuring a fully digital border and immigration system. Customers are advised to update their UKVI accounts with any changes and continue carrying their physical documents until expiration when traveling internationally.
