The latest move by the Republican governor underscores his ongoing critique of Democratic-majority states, accusing them of inadequate action on immigration matters. In a scathing statement, DeSantis condemned illegal immigration while aiming at states like California for issuing driver’s licenses and state IDs to undocumented immigrants, a practice that will now find no sanctuary in Florida under the newly enacted laws.
The timing of DeSantis’s signature on the legislation coincided with his announcement of the interception of a human smuggling boat from Haiti, laden with drugs and weapons, in Brevard County. DeSantis cited this incident as a prime example necessitating the implementation of stricter immigration laws.
Among the key legislative measures is Senate Bill 1036, which imposes harsher penalties on undocumented immigrants re-entering Florida after deportation. Under this bill, repeat offenders will face escalated charges, with third-degree felonies upgraded to second-degree felonies, second-degree felonies elevated to first-degree felonies, and first-degree felonies categorized as life felonies.
Additionally, House Bill 1451 prohibits counties and municipalities from recognizing ID cards issued to illegal aliens by other jurisdictions, reinforcing existing statutes that bar local entities from issuing IDs or driver licenses to undocumented immigrants.
Furthermore, House Bill 1589 intensifies penalties for individuals operating vehicles without a license. Repeat offenders will now face steeper consequences, including increased jail time and mandatory minimum sentences.
