Starting November 1, 2023, the new edition of Form I-9, dated August 1, 2023, is a must-have for all businesses across the United States. Until October 31, 2023, you have the green light to use the previous edition, dated October 21, 2019.
While the content remains unchanged from the October 21, 2019 version, the revamped form introduces an updated organization. Notably, it aligns with the recent Department of Homeland Security (DHS) rule, empowering certain E-Verify employers to adopt an alternative process for remote review of Form I-9 documents in specific situations.
Here’s the lowdown: the new form doesn’t alter any employer or employee obligations related to work authorization verification or re-verification. However, it brings a fresh structure into play. Additionally, it incorporates a new checkbox, allowing employers to indicate if they’ve utilized the alternative remote document inspection process, authorized for qualifying E-Verify employers handling I-9 document reviews for employees hired on or after August 1, 2023.
Stay compliant and seamlessly transition to the updated Form I-9 by November 1, 2023. It’s not just paperwork—it’s ensuring your business stays in the regulatory loop.
