ETS Plans to Introduce Personalized TOEFL Tests Aligned with Individual Backgrounds and Needs
The Educational Testing Service (ETS) has revealed its initiative to offer a personalized version of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam, taking into account individual requirements and test takers’ backgrounds. Rohit Sharma, Global Senior Vice President of Higher Education and Work Skills at ETS, discussed the agency’s plan for tailored assessments and increased utilization of Artificial Intelligence in the TOEFL test. The objective is to create an unbiased assessment by considering specific needs and backgrounds, enabling a more accurate evaluation of language proficiency. Sharma stated that the rollout of personalized assessments is expected within the next 24 to 36 months, involving collaboration with institutions willing to adopt and fund these differentiated assessments. The TOEFL test, widely accepted by institutions worldwide, is a standardized measure of English language proficiency for non-native speakers aiming to enroll in English-speaking universities. ETS has also incorporated AI for content generation, test security, and personalized feedback to help test-takers improve specific areas. The use of AI for personalization is part of ETS’s ongoing efforts to enhance the TOEFL test experience and address the evolving needs of test-takers.
