The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced that it will now automatically extend the validity of Permanent Resident Cards to 36 months for lawful permanent residents who submit Form I-90 (Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card). This new extension will benefit those who properly file Form I-90 to renew their expiring or expired Green Cards. Previously, Form I-90 receipt notices offered a 24-month extension.

USCIS has revised the wording on Form I-90 receipt notices to extend the validity of a Green Card to 36 months from the expiration date shown on the current Green Card for those who have newly filed a Form I-90 renewal request. Since September 10 onwards, USCIS began issuing amended receipt notices for individuals with pending Form I-90 applications.

These receipt notices can be used in conjunction with an expired Green Card as proof of continued status and employment authorization. This extension aims to assist applicants experiencing longer processing times by providing evidence of their lawful permanent resident status while they wait for their renewed Green Card.

If you no longer possess your Green Card and require evidence of your lawful permanent resident status while awaiting your replacement Green Card, you can request an appointment at a USCIS Field Office by contacting the USCIS Contact Center. After you file Form I-90, we may issue you an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp.

This change is designed to alleviate concerns and provide interim proof of status, ensuring that lawful permanent residents can maintain their employment and other benefits while their renewal applications are being processed.
