United States Issues Guidance to Online Platforms for Safeguarding Human Rights Defenders

In recognition of the crucial role digital technologies play in empowering Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) globally, the United States has unveiled new guidance aimed at enhancing the protection of HRDs online. This initiative responds to the dual nature of digital tools, which can serve as both a resource for HRDs and a weapon for repression against them.

The guidance, structured around 10 recommendations jointly released by the United States and the European Union on March 11, outlines best practices and actions that online platforms can adopt to bolster support for HRDs facing threats. These recommendations include commitments to HRD protection policies, risk identification, information exchange with relevant stakeholders, and the provision of safety tools and security education.

By emphasizing the importance of transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement, the United States reaffirms its unwavering dedication to prioritizing human rights in its foreign policy agenda. This guidance reflects a broader commitment to shaping the use of technology in a manner consistent with democratic values and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
